Castles & Fortresses

A major highlight is the medieval border and customs station Altfinstermünz, which remains complete with its historic bridge and dramatic rock passages.
Historic Alpine Wall
Nauders has been profoundly influenced by its unique location in the border triangle, and its eventful history can still be deeply felt today in the remains of the Alpine Wall at Plamortboden. High above the village, you can visit the restored tank barriers and bunkers that stand as silent witnesses to the past. Our tip: Seamlessly combine culture with sport by taking a scenic mountain bike tour to this site – you’ll be rewarded with fantastic, sweeping views of Lake Reschensee.

Thanks to Nauders’ unique position in the border triangle (A/CH/I), countless picturesque excursion destinations are just waiting to be discovered. Visit the historic Tirolean provincial capital of Innsbruck with its famous “Golden Roof,” or soak up the Mediterranean flair in charming Merano.
The excitement truly begins where nature meets culture: plan a fascinating detour to the imposing Kaunertal Glacier, where you can marvel at the eternal ice even in midsummer. The journey along the spectacular Kaunertal Glacier Road, with its 20 hairpin bends, is an adventure in itself.
Alternatively, experience the spectacular Bernina Express, which takes you literally from the glacier to the palm trees. The Albula and Bernina railway line is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers incomparable panoramic views on the journey to Tirano.
The Tower in the Lake
Lake Reschensee is a popular destination for excursions and photo opportunities, but its history is profoundly moving: due to the damming of the lake in 1950, the entire village of Graun and a large part of Reschen sank beneath the floods. Today, only the church tower rising out of the water stands as a silent witness to this past. Our tip: We highly recommend a scenic bike tour around the entire Lake Reschen.
